Source Code Review
Engineers reviewing engineers' code — catching what black-box testing cannot reach.
Manual and automated static analysis — catches injection entry points, hardcoded secrets, insecure deserialization, vulnerable dependencies, and business logic errors that dynamic testing never reaches.
Methodology
-
Scope & Access
Define target repositories, branches, and commit scope. Read-only access via your SCM or an air-gapped encrypted archive for sensitive codebases. NDAs and DPAs in place before any code moves.
-
SCA + Dependency Audit
Inventory every third-party package, flag known CVEs with exploit status, evaluate license risk, identify abandoned or unmaintained components.
-
Secrets Scan
Detect credentials, API keys, private keys, and tokens embedded in current source AND Git history. Historical secrets are just as dangerous as live ones.
-
SAST Analysis
Automated static analysis with Semgrep, CodeQL, and language-specific tools, tuned for your stack with custom rules for your framework and threat model.
-
Manual Review
Expert review of high-risk areas: authentication, authorization, cryptography, data handling, and business logic flows that SAST cannot follow across file boundaries.
-
Reporting
CWE-mapped findings with file and line references, severity-scored against CVSS v3.1, deduplicated across SAST and manual findings.
-
Remediation & Verification
Engineer-to-engineer fix guidance. Re-review of fixed code before sign-off — we don't believe in 'fix it and hope'.
What You Get
- Executive Summary (non-technical, for leadership and board)
- Detailed Findings Report with file and line references, CWE mapping, and CVSS scores
- Dependency Audit Report (CVE-mapped with severity and exploit status)
- Secrets Inventory (current repository + historical commits)
- Remediation Guidance with code-level examples in your language and framework
- Fix Verification Pass (post-remediation re-review)
- CI/CD integration recommendations for shift-left security
Frequently Asked
- Do we give you a full repo copy?
- We prefer read-only access to your SCM (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket). For sensitive codebases we can work from an air-gapped encrypted archive. NDAs and DPAs are in place before any code is shared.
- What languages do you cover?
- Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, Java/Kotlin, Ruby, PHP, C#, C/C++, Rust, Swift. If you have a niche language or framework, we will tell you honestly before the engagement starts.
- How is this different from just running Semgrep ourselves?
- Semgrep catches syntactic patterns. It will not catch business logic flaws, cross-file data flow issues, or authentication gaps spanning multiple services. We combine SAST tooling with expert manual review — you pay for the judgment, not the scan.
- Do you integrate with our CI/CD?
- Yes. We recommend a shift-left strategy — point-in-time reviews catch bugs, but CI integration catches them before merge. We will advise on Semgrep rules, GitHub Actions workflows, and OPA policies to encode your security requirements into the pipeline.
